closed captions

Dialogue shown visually

Closed captions are text displayed on a video screen showing dialogue and relevant sounds, primarily for deaf or hard-of-hearing viewers.

Unlike open captions, which are permanently embedded, closed captions can be toggled on or off by the viewer: Turn on the closed captions so we don't wake the baby.

Often abbreviated CC.
