open captions
Permanent on-screen text
Open captions are subtitles permanently embedded in video content, visible to all viewers without the option to turn them off.
Unlike closed captions, which viewers can enable or disable, open captions are burned into the image itself.
They're common in social media videos, foreign films with translations, and venues where enabling closed captions isn't practical: The restaurant TV had open captions so patrons could follow without sound.
