clay pigeons

Trap shooting targets

Clay pigeons are disk-shaped targets thrown into the air for shooting practice or competition, also called clay targets or pigeons.

Made of pitch and chalk rather than clay, they shatter when hit.

The sport of shooting them is called skeet or trap shooting.

Figuratively, a clay pigeon is an easy target or vulnerable person: He was a clay pigeon for the con artist.
