chalk line
Snapped string mark
A chalk line is a string coated with colored chalk powder, used to mark straight lines on surfaces.
The string is stretched taut between two points and snapped against the surface, leaving a temporary guide line for cutting, aligning, or construction work: He snapped a chalk line across the plywood before making the cut.
The term also refers to the line itself.
