ceilometer

Measures cloud height

A ceilometer is an instrument that measures the height of a cloud base or the overall cloud ceiling above the ground.

It works by projecting a beam of light upward and measuring the reflection, commonly used at airports to assess visibility conditions for aircraft: The ceilometer indicated a ceiling of 500 feet.
