cattleguard

Hooved-animal deterrent

A cattleguard is a grid of parallel bars or pipes set into a roadway at a fence line, creating gaps that cattle and other livestock won't cross because their hooves would fall through.

This allows vehicles to pass without the need to stop and open a gate.

Cattleguards are common on ranches and rural roads throughout the American West.

Also spelled as two words: cattle guard.
