carbonisation

Turning to carbon

Carbonisation is the British spelling of carbonization, the process of converting organic material into carbon or carbon-rich residue through heating in the absence of oxygen.

This occurs naturally over millions of years to create coal and fossil fuels, or artificially in industrial processes to produce charcoal, coke, and carbon black.

The term also describes what happens when food burns: The carbonisation of the toast set off the smoke alarm.
