girdling

Stripping bark circumferentially

Girdling is cutting a ring around a tree trunk or branch, severing the bark and the layer beneath that carries nutrients.

This kills the tree by starving the roots while leaving the wood standing—a technique used to clear land or kill unwanted trees without felling them: Girdling the invasive species allowed native saplings to get more light.

The term extends to anything that encircles completely.
