butcherbird
Thorn-skewering predator
A butcherbird is any of several predatory songbirds that impale their prey—insects, small birds, lizards—on thorns or barbed wire, creating a larder resembling a butcher's hooks.
The name applies to shrikes and to unrelated Australian species with similar habits.
A butcherbird had skewered a grasshopper on the fence.
