turtledove

Soft-voiced dove

A turtledove is a small wild dove with a soft, purring coo, found across Europe and Asia.

The name has nothing to do with turtles—it comes from the bird's call.

Turtledoves appear frequently in poetry and scripture as symbols of devoted love, and two turtle doves feature in the Christmas carol "The Twelve Days of Christmas."
