broilers

Oven's upper compartment

Broilers are young chickens raised specifically for meat production, typically slaughtered at six to eight weeks old.

The term distinguishes them from laying hens and older stewing chickens.

A broiler is also the part of an oven or a separate appliance designed for cooking with direct high heat from above: Put the steaks under the broiler for a few minutes.
