A bobtail is a tail that has been cut short, or an animal—especially a horse or dog—with such a tail.
The Old English Sheepdog is sometimes called a bobtail.
By extension, bobtail describes anything shortened or truncated: a bobtail truck lacks a trailer.
In the phrase ragtag and bobtail, it means the disreputable or common elements of a group.
