Odd one out
A fifth wheel is someone or something unnecessary—a person who feels out of place in a group, especially when accompanying two couples: I felt like a fifth wheel on their double date.
The term comes from a coupling device that connects a trailer to a tractor, which despite its name is essential.
A fifth wheel is also a type of large recreational trailer that attaches to a pickup truck bed using this mechanism.
