tabby pattern
Cat coat markings
A tabby pattern is the distinctive coat marking found on many cats, characterized by stripes, swirls, or spots against a lighter background, often with an M-shaped marking on the forehead.
The pattern comes in several varieties—classic (swirled), mackerel (striped), spotted, and ticked.
Tabby refers to the pattern, not a breed: She adopted a tabby from the shelter.
