bobtails

Surgically shortened tails

Bobtails are animals with docked or naturally short tails—especially horses and dogs.

The Old English Sheepdog is sometimes called a bobtail.

The word extends to anything similarly shortened or truncated.

In the song "Jingle Bells," bells on bobtails ring refers to horses with cropped tails pulling the sleigh.
