shorthair

Close-cut fur breed

A shorthair is a cat of a breed characterized by a short, dense coat, as distinguished from longhaired varieties like Persians.

American shorthairs and British shorthairs are popular breeds: We adopted a tabby shorthair from the shelter.

The term also applies to shorthaired dogs, though less commonly.
