blackshirts

Italian fascist militia

Blackshirts were members of fascist paramilitary organizations, named for their uniform.

The term originally referred to Mussolini's Italian fascist squads in the 1920s, later extending to similar groups elsewhere, including Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists in the 1930s.

The word now evokes fascist thuggery generally: The blackshirts beat protesters in the streets.
