Lateran Treaty
Papal state creation
The Lateran Treaty is the 1929 agreement between Italy and the Holy See that established Vatican City as an independent state and settled decades of tension following Italian unification.
The treaty granted the Catholic Church sovereignty over its tiny territory and compensated it for lost papal lands.
The Lateran Treaty created the world's smallest independent nation.
