berg
Polar sea hazard
A berg is an iceberg—a massive chunk of ice floating in polar waters, most of its bulk hidden beneath the surface.
The word is simply a shortened form: We spotted a berg off the starboard bow.
In South African English, berg also refers to a mountain, from Afrikaans.
