bentonite

Absorbent volcanic clay

Bentonite is a highly absorbent clay formed from volcanic ash, prized for its ability to swell when wet and form impermeable barriers.

It has diverse industrial applications: as a binding agent in foundry sand, a sealant for ponds and landfills, a clarifying agent in wine and beer, and the clumping ingredient in cat litter.

The contractor used bentonite to seal the leaking pond.

Bentonite also appears in drilling mud and cosmetic face masks.
