belugas

Arctic sea canaries

Belugas are small white whales found in Arctic and subarctic waters, known for their rounded foreheads and lack of dorsal fin.

The word also refers to beluga sturgeon, the large fish from whose roe comes beluga caviar—the most prized and expensive variety: The restaurant offered beluga at three hundred dollars an ounce.
