sperm whales
Moby Dick's species
Sperm whales are the largest of the toothed whales, distinguished by their enormous block-shaped heads that contain a waxy substance called spermaceti, which was historically prized for candles and lubricants.
These deep-diving predators hunt giant squid in the ocean depths and were the primary target of 19th-century whaling fleets, most famously depicted in *Moby-Dick*.
We spotted a pod of sperm whales off the coast of the Azores.
