pilot whales

Bulbous-headed ocean mammals

Pilot whales are medium-sized toothed whales with bulbous foreheads and dark coloring, found in oceans worldwide.

They travel in large social groups called pods, which historically made them easy targets for whalers who would drive the entire group ashore.

The name comes from the belief that pods follow a single leader or "pilot." A pod of pilot whales surfaced near the boat.
