backswamp

Behind-levee marsh

A backswamp is a low-lying, poorly drained area of a floodplain, typically found between the natural levee of a river and the higher ground at the valley's edge.

These waterlogged zones collect sediment and organic matter during floods, creating marshy conditions: The backswamp remained soggy for weeks after the river receded.

The term appears mainly in geology and environmental science.
