baymen

Coastal waters workers

Baymen are people who make their living from a bay—fishing, clamming, oystering, or harvesting other shellfish from coastal waters.

The term is especially associated with Long Island's Great South Bay and similar Atlantic coastal communities where generations have worked the same waters: The baymen opposed the development that would pollute their clamming grounds.

The word carries connotations of traditional, working-class maritime life threatened by pollution, regulation, and coastal development.
