Armored naval vessels
Battlecruisers are warships developed in the early twentieth century that combined the heavy guns of battleships with the speed of cruisers, sacrificing armor for velocity.
They were designed to outgun anything they couldn't outrun.
The type proved vulnerable in major fleet actions and was largely abandoned after World War I, though the term occasionally appears in science fiction for fast, heavily armed spacecraft.
