hotbed
Place fostering growth
A hotbed is a place or situation where something flourishes intensely, usually something undesirable: a hotbed of corruption, a hotbed of radical politics.
The term comes from gardening, where a hotbed is a glass-covered bed of soil heated by fermenting manure to force early plant growth.
The figurative sense dominates modern usage.
