field station
Remote study site
A field station is a research facility located away from a main institution, typically in a remote or natural setting where scientists can study phenomena firsthand: The marine biologists spent summers at a field station on the coast.
Field stations support extended observation and data collection in environments that can't be replicated in laboratories—rainforests, deserts, coral reefs, polar regions.
The term also applies to remote outposts for military or intelligence operations.
