climbers

Those who ascend

Climbers are plants that grow upward by attaching to surfaces or supports—ivy climbing a wall, vines winding up a trellis.

The word also names people who climb: mountaineers scaling peaks, or social climbers seeking status.

In either sense, climbers ascend by gripping whatever's available: The climbers reached base camp by nightfall.
