ice station
Arctic research facility
An ice station is a research facility established on polar ice, whether floating sea ice or an ice shelf.
Scientists at ice stations study climate, oceanography, and Arctic or Antarctic conditions, often in extreme isolation: The team spent eight months at the ice station collecting data.
Military ice stations have also served strategic purposes during the Cold War.
