backerboard

Behind the tiles

Backerboard is a flat, rigid panel used as a substrate behind tile, typically in bathrooms and kitchens.

Made of cement, fiber cement, or foam, it provides a stable, moisture-resistant surface that won't warp or deteriorate when wet: We installed cement backerboard before tiling the shower walls.
