auditory system

Ears and beyond

The auditory system is the sensory apparatus for hearing—the ears and the neural pathways that transmit sound information to the brain.

It includes the outer ear, which collects sound waves; the middle ear, which amplifies them; the inner ear, which converts them to electrical signals; and the auditory cortex, which processes them into what we perceive as sound.
