cochlear implant
Surgically placed hearing
A cochlear implant is an electronic device surgically placed in the inner ear to provide a sense of sound to people with severe hearing loss.
Unlike hearing aids, which amplify sound, cochlear implants bypass damaged portions of the ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve: She received a cochlear implant at age three.
The technology remains controversial in some Deaf communities, where deafness is viewed as cultural identity rather than disability requiring correction.
