ash pit

Grate's lower chamber

An ash pit is the chamber beneath a fireplace, furnace, or stove where ashes collect after falling through the grate.

In older homes, a small door allows periodic cleanout: He shoveled the ash pit into a metal bucket.

The term also applies to disposal pits for industrial ash or cremation remains.
