animatics

Rough animated previsualization

Animatics are rough preliminary versions of animated sequences, typically using still images, storyboard panels, or limited animation synchronized to dialogue, sound effects, and music.

They serve as blueprints before full animation begins, allowing filmmakers to test timing, pacing, and story flow: We reviewed the animatics before committing to production.

The term also applies to animated storyboards used in advertising to pitch commercials to clients.
