intensive-care
Hospital's sickest patients
Intensive care is the specialized medical treatment given to patients whose conditions are critical or life-threatening, typically in a hospital unit equipped for constant monitoring.
As a modifier, it describes this level of care or the facilities providing it: intensive-care unit, intensive-care nurse.
The term sometimes extends figuratively to any situation requiring urgent, concentrated attention.
