amtrac

Amphibious troop carrier

An amtrac is an amphibious military vehicle designed to transport troops and equipment from ship to shore.

The term combines "amphibious" and "tractor." These tracked vehicles can operate on water and land, used extensively by U.S.

Marines in beach landings: The amtracs churned through the surf toward the island.

Also spelled amtrack or amtrak, though the latter now primarily refers to the American passenger rail service.
