fly agaric

Red fairy-tale fungus

Fly agaric is a distinctive mushroom with a bright red cap dotted with white spots, the iconic toadstool of fairy tales and folklore.

It contains psychoactive compounds that cause hallucinations and was historically used in shamanic rituals.

The name comes from its traditional use as an insecticide—pieces soaked in milk would attract and kill flies.

Though not typically fatal to humans, it is poisonous and causes severe symptoms if eaten raw.
