field mushroom

Pasture cap picker

A field mushroom is the common wild mushroom found in grasslands and pastures across Europe and North America, closely related to the cultivated button mushroom.

It has a white cap that darkens with age and pink-to-brown gills underneath.

Field mushrooms are prized for eating but must be carefully distinguished from poisonous lookalikes: We found field mushrooms growing in the meadow after the rain.
