krypteia

Secret helot killing

Krypteia was a secret police force in ancient Sparta, composed of young men who stalked and killed helots (enslaved laborers) as both a form of terror and a rite of passage.

The practice kept the subjugated population in fear while training Spartans for warfare.

The term sometimes appears in discussions of state-sanctioned violence or covert operations: The regime's secret police operated like a modern krypteia.
