alcohol abuse

Harmful drinking pattern

Alcohol abuse is a pattern of drinking that causes harm—to health, relationships, work, or safety—without necessarily involving physical dependence.

The term occupies middle ground between occasional excess and full addiction: His alcohol abuse led to a DUI and job loss.

In clinical contexts, it has largely been replaced by "alcohol use disorder," which covers a spectrum of severity.
