dampeners
Things that muffle
Dampeners are devices or factors that reduce intensity, force, or enthusiasm.
A mechanical dampener absorbs vibration or shock: The piano's dampeners stop the strings from vibrating.
Figuratively, anything that diminishes energy or excitement acts as a dampener: High interest rates are dampeners on economic growth.
Often interchangeable with dampers, though damper is more common in most contexts.
