abductive reasoning

Best explanation inference

Abductive reasoning is inference to the best explanation—forming a hypothesis that accounts for observed facts.

Unlike deduction (which guarantees conclusions from premises) or induction (which generalizes from examples), abduction works backward from evidence to the most plausible cause: The grass is wet; it probably rained.

Scientists, doctors, and detectives rely on abductive reasoning when diagnosing problems or reconstructing events from incomplete information.
