Viking ships
Dragon-prowed boats
Viking ships were the wooden vessels built by Scandinavian seafarers from roughly the 8th to 11th centuries.
Characterized by shallow drafts, overlapping hull planks, and symmetrical ends allowing reversal without turning, they enabled both ocean voyages and river navigation.
The iconic longships carried raiders and traders; broader cargo ships called knarrs transported settlers and goods.
The Viking ships at the museum still look seaworthy after a thousand years.
