hedges
Rows of shrubbery
Hedges are rows of shrubs or small trees planted close together to form a boundary or barrier: a hedge of boxwood.
The verb hedge means to enclose with such a barrier, or more commonly, to limit risk by taking offsetting positions: hedge your bets, hedge against inflation.
Financial hedges protect against losses.
To hedge in speech is to qualify statements, avoiding commitment: She hedged when asked directly.
