Union Jack

London's flying colors

The Union Jack is the national flag of the United Kingdom, combining the crosses of St.

George (England), St.

Andrew (Scotland), and St.

Patrick (Ireland) into a single design.

The name may come from the maritime term for a flag flown from a ship's bow.

British English uses Union Jack and Union Flag interchangeably, though purists sometimes insist the former applies only at sea.
