St George
England's patron saint
St George is the patron saint of England, a Christian martyr traditionally depicted slaying a dragon.
The historical George was likely a Roman soldier executed for his faith around 303 AD; the dragon legend emerged centuries later as allegory for triumph over evil.
St George's Day falls on April 23.
The red cross of St George appears on England's flag.
