Uhuru

East African liberty

Uhuru is a Swahili word meaning freedom or independence, widely known from African independence movements of the mid-20th century.

It gained broader recognition through the Star Trek character Lieutenant Uhura, whose name derives from the word.

Uhuru appears in English contexts referencing African liberation or as a proper name: The crowd chanted "Uhuru!" as the flag was raised.
