UN peacekeeping
International conflict intervention
UN peacekeeping refers to military and civilian operations deployed by the United Nations to maintain peace in conflict zones.
Peacekeepers—often called blue helmets for their distinctive headgear—monitor ceasefires, protect civilians, and support political transitions.
The missions operate with consent of host countries and typically cannot engage in combat except in self-defense: UN peacekeeping forces were stationed along the border.
Critics note peacekeepers have sometimes failed to prevent atrocities or have themselves committed abuses.
