Bulgars

Sofia's native population

The Bulgars were a Turkic people who migrated from Central Asia to the Balkans in the early medieval period.

They established the First Bulgarian Empire in the seventh century, eventually merging with local Slavic populations to form the Bulgarian nation.

The term appears primarily in historical contexts: The Bulgars crossed the Danube and settled in what is now Bulgaria.
